It's a tricky thing to go through 30 thousand non-wedding photos that I kept this year, and even trickier to narrow it down. In the end though, I picked ones that brought back a twang when I passed over them - ones that had a story or a feeling. Each of these quick glimpses, brings back a much longer story, or a much longer setup. Some of these had no build-up, and some had hours of preparation, but the common thread is that the ability to recognize moments has been a labor of love, and that labor is not nearly complete.
At the end of each year, I try to decide where to go next. I look at photos from the year previous and try to find trends that I like, and trends that I don't like. One thing I think I've seen from 2017's photos is that they feel quieter to me. It may be a reaction to the uncertain noise in the national scene. It may be a maturing, but even if you are mature, there are times to be quiet and there are times to be heard. I hope to be given the wisdom to know the difference at the time that it is needed.
This year started with a project called "The Listening Project". I met with and made new friends, and honestly tried to put the photography in the back seat in place of conversation. For someone who likes to talk, and also likes to photograph, it was both a simple project and a hard one, but it did teach me that I haven't been great at listening to people that I photograph. I focused on that more this year, and will continue to work on refining it. I think 2018 will be a year of listening too, but instead of just clients, I want to also listen to other creatives. I've always wanted to learn from old masters, and I've read their books and wished more were around, but there are always newcomers, and while their ideas haven't been refined over years of practice, they are able to bring fresh raw thoughts that haven't been beaten down. This year that I want to be able to recognize that, and listen to people who approach the process differently than I do.
We live in a hurry. We consume in a hurry and with that can lead to a skimming of things that go much deeper. I won't claim that all these photos are deep, or mean more than they appear to, but many do. If you have the time, feel free to hang out a bit. Meander (I like that word), and as always, thanks for being the other half in my artistic collaboration.
Jesus and Casandra are married!
After meeting Jesus and Casandra I knew this would be a rock and roll wedding, and I was not disappointed. 11.11.17 - Twin Flames.
Best of Weddings 2017 - Grant Beachy Photo
Did a little surf back through weddings and picked a few photos. These weren't all my most technical photos, or all perfect poses, but the memories of these times made me happy. The memories are the value anyway. Man, you guys rock. It was such an honor to be there on these days you put so much love into. Thank you.
Skye and Dillon are married.
One of the shortest and still most visually rich weddings I've shot all year. Skye and Dillon brought an understated and simple style that worked perfectly to project an old Hollywood feel. I decided to shoot it that way. Bread and Chocolate was a perfect venue to help me achieve that goal.
Kent and Sara and married!
Made a trip down to Evansville, IN for this awesome wedding. So many fun and heartfelt moments, which always makes me feel good to be able to capture, and I'm gonna say Kent and Sara were the most enthusiastic dancers this year :-). Congrats!
Paul and Emily are married!
I had fun chatting cars and bikes with Paul and Emily last year at their engagement session, and the theme continued into their wedding. Emily is a fiercely passionate person, and as I watched them together, I saw how Paul was a great counterpart to her, and how he also cared deeply. It was meaningful to be able to stop to pay tribute to Paul's father, and the personal vows Paul and Emily read to each other at the reception were beautiful. We finished up with a few photos outside the Lerner, and in the concession stand where Paul worked when he was still in High School. Congrats guys, and wish you all the happiness!
Michael and Maggie are married!
Finally got to photograph at Red Tail Farm, and it was beautiful wedding to get started with. I loved the outdoor ceremony spot, and there were so many neat little touches from this wedding. Congrats guys!
Brooke and Mike are married!
Brooke and Mike got married at the beginning of a crazy run of shoots for me, on what felt like one of the hottest days of the year, but I love how these photos turned out. It was a beautiful day. Congrats guys!
Jake and Chelsey are married!
A beautiful Brown County wedding with all the best people. I loved the details. There was a flower grandma, there was a beer burro. It was a hot, sweaty, classic, dancing night.

Flowers were provided by: Posh Pedals, Indianapolis
Cake provided by: A Piece of Cake, Greenwood, IN
Beer Burro provided by: Ravenwood Mini Donkeys
Veronica is a Quinceañera.
Something totally new for me. A Quinceañera can feel similar to a wedding celebration but in emphasis and tradition, it is very different, with it's own customs and cues. I had such a great time learning more about this important time, and it was an honor to photograph it.
